Entertainment ENsemble (Marching Band) |
This ensemble is designed as an enrichment course to our core music class offerings. Instructor approval is required. All Students must be co-enrolled in Orchestra I, II, Jazz, or Production Orchestra.
P.E. Credit will be awarded to all participants due to the physical nature involved in the curriculum. Woodwinds, Brass, Drumline, and Percussion techniques along with rhythm section and Strings. This Ensemble will prepare large Production Numbers with coordinated movement, lights, and effects for public performance in a non-competitive format. Special off-campus and campus performances will be featured throughout the school year. |
Orchestra i |
This ensemble is a core music class focusing on the classic fundamentals of musicianship. It consists of woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion students with prior fundamental training. In certain cases, students may enter this class with no experience. Literature will range from grade 2-4 throughout the year based on appropriate application. Emphasis will be placed on the fundamentals of individual and ensemble responsibilities. This Orchestra performs in all IM concerts, the SCSBOA Santa Susana Festival in March, and graduation.

This ensemble is our intermediate/advanced level orchestra and is considered a core music class focusing on the classic fundamentals of musicianship. It consists of strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion students who are developing into more advanced skill sets and abilities. Literature will range from grade 3-5 throughout the year based on appropriate application. Emphasis will be placed on more challenging and simultaneous performer responsibilities. This Orchestra performs in all IM concerts, the SCSBOA Santa Susana Festival in March, the Ventura County String Exchange (for string players), and graduation. Private lessons are encouraged.

Jazz Ensemble |
This ensemble is designed as an enrichment course to our core music class offerings. Instructor approval is required. It is intended for moderate to advanced instrumental woodwind, brass, and rhythm section musicians to study the elements of jazz literature and improvisation. Concurrent enrollment in a core music class is recommended. Big Band, 10 piece, and Combo components will be utilized for all students to maximize performance and learning opportunities. Depending upon Combo participation, some combos may be performing at a myriad of school and local community events. Many event invitations occur throughout the year and are chosen based on student availability and investment. The entire class will perform at all IM concerts, Swing Night in the Winter, Jazz Festivals 2nd semester, Dinner & a Movie events in October & May, and graduation in June.

Production Orchestra |
This ensemble is designed as a capstone course for Instrumental Music. Instructor approval is required. It is intended for advanced instrumental musicians to study the challenging instrumental repertoire of Musical Theater. Concurrent enrollment in a core music class is highly recommended. Musical Theater Performances (Musicals) will happen twice a year, roughly once a semester. In addition to Musical Performances, the entire class will perform at the fall, winter and spring concerts, and graduation in June.
Attendance is unique in this class. A schedule for the year is provided to students and can be found on our CHARMS Calendar embedded on our website. Students must attend weekly rehearsals and communicate any schedule conflicts well in advance. Tech rehearsals and Full Company Coordination rehearsals are mandatory, (30% of grade). All SSHS Instrumental Music Students participate in the hosting of our annual SCSBOA Festival in March as a part of the curriculum of this class. ALL TECH rehearsals are treated as performances.
